Dover Teacher Completes 10 Day Visit to ELPS

January 11, 2002 - Dover teacher Mrs. Sonto Mthiyane wraps up her 10 day visit to ELPS today by spending time at the high school and with Glencairn School 6th graders. Her visit is part of the ongoing teacher exchange between Dover and ELPS teachers, and follows the visit of ELHS' Carole Leonard to Dover during the summer of 2001. The teacher exchanges are designed to provide teachers an opportunity to gain 'first hand' knowledge of their cross border cohort's culture, to jointly develop collaborative lesson plans, and to better understand each other's teaching methods, curriculum, and general teaching environment.

Hosted by Ms. Leonard, Mrs. Mthiyane observed, participated in, and led many classes during the week. In addition to Ms. Leonard's English classes and others at the high school, Mrs. Mthiyane led discussions in all three of Marianne Forman's 7th grade English classes. Ms. Leonard, Mrs. Mthiyane, and Ms. Forman gave a presentation about the ELPS/Dover collaborative projects to a group of local and international educators involved in the East Lansing based LATTICE (Linking All Types of Teachers in Cross-cultual Education) organization. A highlight of the week was a reception hosted by the high school faculty in honor of Mrs. Mthiyane's visit and her participation in the collaborative projects. The reception included musical performances by the ELSingers and other ELHS students.
